Leave a Legacy
“Be calm, kind and clear. This is the most valuable thing we human beings can learn, train in and master. To be happy and live in harmony, liberate our minds and free others: this is my deep wish.”
Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche
The Power of a gift in your will
As people who love Gomde UK, we have the power to strengthen and protect this “island of jewels”; to keep it alive and thriving for today, tomorrow and well into the future. All the material things we’ve worked for such as personal property, assets like retirement funds and insurance policies can become the tools of charitable gift planning. These tools allow you to further your beliefs and values which in turn can become an expression of your generosity.

Many people think that it is difficult and complicated to write a will but in fact it is relatively straight forward. However, you should always seek professional advice beforehand. Your will provides you with the opportunity to take care of everything that is important to you. After taking care of family and friends, you may wish to leave a gift to Gomde UK. Planned gifts can also provide you with valuable tax benefits.
The Impact of a legacy
Thank you for considering Gomde in your planned giving. By including Gomde UK in your estate and financial planning, you are playing a key role in securing the future of the centre. Your gift will ensure we are able to continue the mission to fulfil Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s aspirations to provide an international centre for the teachings of the Buddha. Our centre supports that vision through seminars, teachings, events, community work, environmental projects and the building of the temple.

If you decide to leave a gift in your will then you create a lasting connection with Gomde UK and directly benefit so many beings both now and into the future. You will play a part in our work for future generations.

Updating an existing will to include a gift to charity
If you want to leave a gift to charity but you’ve already made a will, that’s no problem – there are a couple of ways you can change it.

Write a new will
The simplest way is to write a new will. Once written, any wills made by that person in the past become void. In fact, most wills will start by reciting that you’re writing a will and that you’re revoking previous wills. You can write a new will with a professional advisor.

Codicils
The other way is to write a codicil, which is a document used to make changes to an existing Will. It’s used as a way to make simple amendments like adding a charity, changing a gift amount or adding an executor. This is all quite straightforward but problems can occur if you ever want to cancel the will in the future.

When you cancel a will that contains a codicil, the codicil does not get cancelled automatically, so when you write a new will it can create inconsistencies and legal problems. To avoid this, make sure that any new will clearly states that you are revoking all wills and codicils previously made.
Different types of legacy
There are two main types of legacy you may want to consider when leaving a gift in your will.

Residuary legacy — a percentage of the legator’s estate.
Residuary legacy is a gift of the residue (or a share of the residue) of the estate. The residue is whatever is left after all debts, funeral expenses, certain other costs and tax and any other legacies have been deducted.
Pecuniary legacy — a gift of a fixed sum of money
Pecuniary legacy is when you leave a fixed sum of money to a particular person. For example, you might leave £1,000 to your cousin Michael.
