Welcome to Gomde UKBuddhist Meditation & Retreat Centre in Yorkshire, England

Founded by the revered Buddhist Master Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Gomde UK offers a beautiful and peaceful environment for anyone seeking to cultivate greater calm, kindness and clarity — whether by deepening your spiritual practice, engaging in our environmental projects or simply being part of our vibrant community.

About Us

Nurturing heart,

mind & land

Gomde UK is set on a 180-acre ‘island’ within the Lindholme Hall Estate, at the heart of Hatfield Moor—a rare and wild landscape part of the Humberhead Levels National Nature Reserve. Guided by Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, we have grown from humble beginnings into a flourishing international Buddhist meditation and retreat centre, welcoming hundreds of visitors each year for individual and group retreats, teachings, and meditation with authentic Buddhist teachers.

Rooted in the principles of impermanence, cause and effect and interdependence, we integrate the dharma (a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘teachings of the Buddha’) into every aspect of our Buddhist Centre. We care for our finite resources through active environmental stewardship, while offering a peaceful, supportive base for our broad and diverse community to learn, grow, and deepen their connection to nature and the world around them.

Buddhist Dharma teachings, meditation & practice

The preservation, study and practice of authentic Buddhist teachings lie at the heart of our meditation and retreat centre. Throughout the year, we host dharma teachings, seminars and retreats with masters of our Buddhist lineage, senior monks and nuns and experienced teachers from our Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s global network, Shedrub Mandala. We offer weekly and monthly meditation and study groups and offer opportunities for supported and solitary retreat. The beauty and seclusion of the estate provide the perfect environment to reconnect with our true nature.

Nature & environmental stewardship

Gomde UK is located within the Humberhead Levels National Nature Reserve—one of the UK’s most biodiverse areas and as rare as any piece of the Amazon rainforest. A precious and fragile site, we have been active for years in the fields of sustainability and conservation. We work with the LOMM group (Lindholme Old Moor Management group) to restore peatlands and combat climate change. Underpinning this we endeavour to live in harmony with the land by generating renewable energy, sustainable building design and organic food gardening. Whether you’d like to join our conservation projects or simply volunteer on the land, everyone is welcome to help protect this rare and precious island.

Architects impression of the vision of Thubten Chokor Ling, a Buddhist Temple in the making.

Exciting News! Explore the vision behind our Buddhist Temple and Monastery

In September 2022, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche shared his wish for Gomde UK to become a Buddhist Monastery with a large temple at its heart. The temple will be a jewel that nurtures and trains a monastic sangha and supports over 1,000 practitioners for learning, reflection and meditation. In 2024, we received planning permission, and in July 2025 we applied for the building permit. We have aspirations to open the temple’s doors by 2028 – a jewel inspiring hope and peace for generations to come, join us in making this vision a reality.
