THUBTEN CHÖKOR LINGA landmark Buddhist Monastery, Temple & Library coming to Gomde UK, England

Born from the heartfelt vision of our spiritual director, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Gomde UK is embarking on a transformative project: the creation of a 21st-century Buddhist monastery, with an extraordinary temple at its heart. Named Thubten Chökor Ling, it will be a permanent home for authentic Buddhist teachings, meditation and contemplation, retreats and community gatherings—a refuge for people from all walks of life, offering guidance and a peaceful and inspiring space for spiritual growth, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation.

Our Vision

Thubten Chökor Ling— The island where the wheel of the Buddha’s teachings turns

We are delighted to announce that Buddhist retreat and meditation centre Gomde UK has received full planning permission to build an extraordinary Buddhist temple in Yorkshire — the first of its kind in England. Guided by the vision of our spiritual director, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, the temple will form the heart of an international centre for culture and heritage, study, meditation and contemplation, and environmental and community stewardship. Named Thubten Chökor Ling, meaning “The Island Where the Wheel of Buddha’s Teachings Turns”, the temple marks a turning point — where timeless wisdom meets the needs of our world today.

BUDDHIST TEMPLE

A Traditional Tibetan Buddhist Temple for 1,000 to gather, study & practice

Thubten Chökor Ling will be situated within the tranquil, 180-acre Lindholme Hall Estate, at the heart of one of the UK’s rarest and most biodiverse habitats. It will provide a sanctuary for spiritual growth, environmental care, and community well-being. While offering peaceful seclusion, the Temple will be remarkably accessible, easily reachable from most major cities in the UK and connected by transport links for millions worldwide.

PEATLAND RETREAT WING

Self-contained retreat rooms for personal retreat, study, reflection & practice

The new Peatland Retreat Wing at Gomde UK is steadily taking shape: ten self-contained studios designed to offer quiet, supportive space for personal retreat. Each studio room shares Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s favourite view of the estate and includes: a private bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a simple, beautiful environment for rest, retreat, reflection, and deepening practice — all surrounded by the stillness of nature and the wide skies of Lindholme Hall Estate.

WORLD-CLASS LIBRARY

A treasure trove of timeless Buddhist wisdom & culture

Since our founding, we have built a rich and growing collection of Buddhist literature spanning time periods, genres, and languages. A living repository of the Buddha’s teachings and the commentaries of great masters across traditions, the library draws practitioners, scholars, and the wider public alike. With over 5,000 volumes, we are now entering a new phase: establishing the UK’s largest Buddhist library of international standing.

QUADRANGLE

Community Winter Courtyard & Facilities

A beautiful winter courtyard, centred around a tranquil pond and sheltered walkway, will invite informal community connection and quiet reflection in nature. Surrounding it, accommodation for monastic and lay residents and visitors — including the Peatland Retreat Wing — will be joined by workshops, learning spaces, and a light-filled indoor-outdoor café. These will support daily community life, alongside dedicated spaces for rest, retreat, contemplation, and meditation.
