What Will Happen on the Day?
Over the past year, sphagnum moss — a tiny but mighty peat-forming plant — has been carefully grown from small native samples in our on-site moss nursery, known as the Mossery. Now it’s ready to harvest.
During the weekend, volunteers will:
- Harvest sphagnum moss grown in the Mossery
- Sort and prepare mixed-species moss bundles
- Help ready the moss for replanting onto Hatfield Moor
You’ll receive a simple introduction to Hatfield Moor and the restoration work taking place here, along with guidance throughout the session. The tasks are practical and hands-on, and there will of course be time for a cup of tea, a chat, and the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings.
The moss prepared during this weekend will be replanted onto the wider moors in spring by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust volunteers as part of wider restoration work to help regenerate damaged areas of the peatlands.
Why This Work Matters
Although peatlands cover only a small percentage of UK land, they store four times more carbon than all of the UK’s forests combined. When healthy, they:
- Lock away carbon
- Reduce flood risk
- Support rare plants, birds and insects
When damaged, they release carbon back into the atmosphere.
Hatfield Moor was heavily impacted by decades of industrial peat extraction. While much progress has been made, key peat-forming mosses have struggled to re-establish naturally.
Your support can help reverse long-term damage and protect this unique landscape for future generations, helping to tackle climate change while restoring habitats for hundreds of species.
What Is the Mire Emergency Project?

The Mire Emergency Project is a volunteer-led effort to restore the peatlands of Hatfield Moor.
Led by the Lindholme Old Moor Management Group (LOMM) — a dedicated collaboration of volunteer ecologists and naturalists who have worked on the Humberhead Levels for nearly 40 years — the project propagates sphagnum moss in a purpose-built nursery on the Lindholme Estate.
With hundreds of volunteer hours already contributed, the Mossery is now producing healthy and established moss colonies ready to replant back onto the moors — helping to rebuild healthy peat-forming systems from the ground up.
It is practical, hopeful climate action — rooted in collaboration and care for the land and nature.
This project has been made possible thanks to the support of Natural England, Nature for Climate Fund, and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
